Sri Lanka plans to extend its acceptance of India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system for simplifying digital payment processes which Indian visitors to the country will use.
The National Payments Corporation of India International Payments Limited (NIPL) will launch this project which enables Indian travelers to pay using their current UPI mobile apps at various Sri Lankan retail locations.
Tourists can use Lanka QR codes which they find at shops and hotels and other sites to make direct payments from their bank accounts without needing cash or international payment cards.
The initiative seeks to provide better service to Indian travelers who constitute a major part of Sri Lankan tourist traffic. The Indian payment system UPI enables users to conduct daily transactions and its international extension simplifies travel through automatic currency conversion.
