Nigeria Pushes Steel Development Efforts in China
  • Nigeria, Sino Steel discuss reviving Ajaokuta Steel plant.
  • Jingye Steel talks focus on building local steel mills.
  • SYS, CSSC Haishen explore energy and healthcare projects.

Nigeria has taken the initiative of enhancing its steel industry to China as the Director-General of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), Mr. Joseph Tegbe, and the Minister for Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Audu, are on a high-level working visit to the Asian country to attract strategic development projects and deepen industrial cooperation with key Chinese partners.

The delegation held a strategic meeting with executives of Sino Steel, one of China's largest and most powerful steel conglomerates, to discuss the revitalization of the Ajaokuta Steel Company, an important industrial asset seen as vital to Nigeria's manufacturing aspirations and job creation strategy.

The talks revolved around technical assessments, operational models, and financing mechanisms needed to restore the operation of the facility to full productivity.

In a statement on Wednesday from NCSP, it said earlier Mr Tegbe had met with the leadership of Jingye Steel, which is among China's top tier of private steelmakers, and they discussed potential for integrated steel mills in Nigeria which is pivotal in growing local capacity for steel production and supporting key sectors to Nigeria such as infrastructure, automotive manufacturing, and construction.

In Beijing, Tegbe also had a productive meeting with SYS Company, a leading water engineering and environmental solutions company that specializes in wastewater recycling and renewable energy generation. Discussions highlighted the prospect of deploying SYS's innovative technologies in Nigeria to convert wastewater into usable goods and energy.

This aligns with Nigeria's aspirations to be environmentally sustainable and to adopt circular economy practices that help support the diversification of energy sources.

Earlier in the visit, the Director-General of NCSP had a follow-up meeting with executives from CSSC Haishen. This was in respect of a previous understanding reached between the Chinese company and CPL Ltd, a leading Nigerian medical and pharmaceutical equipment company.

The meeting was about obtaining better pricing for medical screening equipment, advancing knowledge transfer and operational support, and securing financial solutions for the long-term sustainability of healthcare modernization.

The strategic partnerships demonstrated in the statement can be construed as part of NCSP’s overall mission to develop transformative partnerships utilizing China’s technology capabilities and Nigeria’s development priorities. This would provide tangible outcomes in health, industry, infrastructure, and environmental innovation.
