Kuwait and Japan reaffirm their strategic partnership, prioritising stable energy supplies, AI, education, economic resilience and security cooperation as they mark 65 years of diplomatic relations.

Kuwait and Japan have reaffirmed their strong and evolving bilateral relationship, pledging to expand cooperation across energy, economic resilience, technology, education and security. The renewed commitment reflects efforts by both countries to build on their longstanding diplomatic ties and advance their Comprehensive and Strategic Partnership.

The relationship gained further momentum in August 2026, when Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah visited Tokyo and met Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi. The two ministers reviewed the progress of bilateral relations, which were elevated to a Comprehensive and Strategic Partnership in 2025. They also marked the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Energy security remains a central pillar of cooperation. Japan expressed appreciation for Kuwait’s continued efforts to maintain stable crude oil supplies amid uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Kuwait, in turn, reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring reliable oil deliveries to Japan. The two countries also discussed Japan’s “Power Asia” initiative, which aims to strengthen oil reserves and support stable energy supplies across the Asian region.

Beyond energy, both sides agreed to accelerate cooperation in emerging areas, including artificial intelligence and education. They also supported resuming the Japan-Kuwait joint committee and holding policy consultations between their foreign ministries, alongside security dialogues to strengthen coordination on shared concerns.

Regional and international developments were also discussed during the meetings, with both countries exchanging views on security challenges and diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and promote stability. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi separately received Kuwait’s foreign minister and highlighted the importance of safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and stronger energy resilience across the Gulf region.

The renewed engagement underscores the importance both governments attach to expanding their partnership beyond traditional energy ties and developing broader cooperation that supports their long-term economic and strategic interests.
