  • Smart Factory Push Aims to Modernize Korea’s Food SMEs.

The government of South Korea will initiate a smart factory program in July to enhance food processing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) into intelligent manufacturing systems.

The initiative, valued at 3 billion won ($2.2 million), is led by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and is managed by a consortium comprising Samsung Electronics Co. and the Korea Federation of Small and Medium Businesses.  Around 15 food producers are anticipated to gain from the initiative by implementing Samsung-created smart factories.

The initiative serves as a strategic support action aimed at accelerating the digital transformation of SMEs while enhancing productivity and competitive quality within the food processing industry. The objective is to create smart factories at Level 1 Advanced or greater, featuring customized automation systems, integration of operational platforms, and on-site guidance from expert mentors at Samsung Electronics.

Companies involved will gain tailored assistance for the adoption of systems such as manufacturing execution system (MES), enterprise resource planning (ERP), supply chain management (SCM), product lifecycle management (PLM), factory energy management system (FEMS), manufacturing automation, process simulation, and ultra-precision mold solutions.

Support encompasses training in production innovation, the execution of practices for manufacturing efficiency, optimization of logistics and materials, and the creation of custom tools to enhance on-site operations. Extra advantages consists of access to Samsung’s open patents, tailored job training initiatives, buyer matching services, and chances to engage in international exhibitions.
