Synopsis:  Kazakhstan and Cyprus sign new agreements covering trade, investment, technology, education, and transport, aiming to deepen economic cooperation, strengthen connectivity, and expand bilateral business opportunities.

Kazakhstan and Cyprus have signed a series of new agreements aimed at strengthening trade, investment, and economic cooperation, marking a significant step forward in bilateral relations between the two countries. The agreements were concluded during the historic state visit of Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides to Kazakhstan, the first such visit by a Cypriot head of state since diplomatic relations were established in 1992.

During talks in Astana, President Christodoulides and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev discussed ways to expand cooperation across multiple sectors, including commerce, transport, technology, energy, finance, and digital transformation. Both leaders described the visit as a milestone that opens new opportunities for long-term economic partnership and stronger political engagement.

Several memoranda of understanding were signed during the visit, covering areas such as higher education, scientific research, culture, sports, information and communication technologies, cybersecurity, and e-governance. A separate cooperation agreement was also signed between the chambers of commerce of both countries to encourage greater business interaction and investment activity.

A key focus of the discussions was expanding trade and investment flows. President Tokayev proposed the creation of an intergovernmental commission and a joint business council to facilitate economic cooperation and support new commercial projects. He also highlighted the growing presence of Cypriot businesses in Kazakhstan, noting that hundreds of companies with Cypriot capital are already operating in the country.

The two leaders also explored opportunities in logistics, financial services, renewable energy, information technology, shipping, and fintech. Kazakhstan invited Cyprus to participate more actively in the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Corridor, also known as the Middle Corridor, which is emerging as a key trade route connecting Asia and Europe. Cyprus’ expertise in maritime services is expected to complement Kazakhstan’s role as a regional transport hub.

Another significant development was the launch of the first direct flight connection between Larnaca and Astana, a move expected to strengthen tourism, business travel, and people-to-people exchanges. The visit also coincided with the opening of Cyprus’ embassy in Kazakhstan, underscoring the growing importance of bilateral relations.

Analysts believe the new agreements will enhance economic cooperation, attract investment, and support greater connectivity between Central Asia and Europe, while creating fresh opportunities for businesses in both countries.
