  • Iran boosts domestic solar inverter manufacturing through new strategic MoU.
  • Rapid solar expansion drives major renewable energy capacity growth nationwide.
  • Wind and solar projects advance Iran’s long-term 30 GW renewables target.

The renewables division of Iran's Energy Ministry (SATBA) announced that it has formalized a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the presidential office focused on science and technology to promote the domestic manufacturing of solar inverters.

Mohsen Tarztalab, head of SATBA, stated that the Energy Ministry reached an agreement under the MoU to ensure the purchase of domestically produced solar inverters, which transform electricity from solar panels into alternating current (AC) for integration into the national power grid.

The deal is part of Iran’s initiatives to expedite the establishment of solar energy facilities across the country. In the press conference, Tarztalab stated that Iran's renewable energy capacity had reached 2.72 gigawatts (GW) by late October, an increase from just 1.225 GW in August 2024 when the current administration began its term.

He stated that the capacity, primarily driven by solar growth, will hit 4 GW by late December and 7 GW by the end of this calendar year in late March. The official stated that approximately 571 solar facilities are being built throughout Iran, noting that the government intends to increase renewable energy capacity to 11 GW by the next summer peak in electricity consumption in July 2026.

Tarztalab reported that Iranian wind farms' output capacity has risen to 0.371 GW, noting that SATBA is overseeing the development of 1.175 GW of new wind power projects throughout Iran. Iran aims for an ambitious goal of 30 GW in renewable energy capacity by 2028. This has occurred as part of initiatives aimed at decreasing the nation’s dependence on thermal power stations that use significant amounts of natural gas or other fossil fuels.
