Egypt and South Korea elevate bilateral ties to a strategic partnership, with both sides expanding cooperation in trade, investment, shipbuilding, clean energy, infrastructure, technology and defence.

Egypt and South Korea elevate their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership as President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung hold a summit in Seoul. The agreement marks a broader phase of cooperation between the two countries across economic, technological, energy and security sectors.

The leaders also agree to begin negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), signalling efforts to further strengthen trade and investment ties. The proposed framework is expected to support greater economic engagement and provide additional opportunities for businesses in both countries.

Several memorandums of understanding are signed during the summit covering areas including shipbuilding, clean energy, power infrastructure and technology. The agreements reflect both countries’ interest in expanding cooperation beyond traditional economic relations and developing partnerships in sectors linked to industrial development and future technologies.

Defence cooperation also forms an important component of the expanding partnership. Lee and El-Sisi highlight the joint production of K9 self-propelled howitzers as a successful example of bilateral defence collaboration and agree to further strengthen cooperation in the sector.

Economic and investment cooperation remains a central priority. During El-Sisi’s state visit, Egypt also seeks to attract additional South Korean investment in manufacturing and technology. The Egyptian president meets representatives of 23 major South Korean companies and renews Egypt’s proposal to establish an integrated Korean industrial zone within the Suez Canal Economic Zone. The proposed zone is intended to serve as a production and export hub for Korean companies seeking access to Egyptian, African, European and Arab markets.

South Korean investment in Egypt shows significant growth. Investment reaches $736.3 million during the first half of fiscal year 2025–26, compared with $77.2 million during the corresponding period a year earlier. Egypt also seeks expanded cooperation with Korea’s Economic Development Cooperation Fund in areas including digital transformation, artificial intelligence and industrial localisation.

The strategic partnership builds on growing diplomatic and economic engagement between Cairo and Seoul. The two countries launch their first strategic dialogue in June 2026, focusing on economic, investment and development cooperation as well as trade, infrastructure, technology, education and renewable energy.

The latest summit therefore provides a broader framework for Egypt and South Korea to deepen economic, industrial and technological cooperation while strengthening defence and strategic coordination. The upgraded relationship also positions both countries to pursue greater cooperation across Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
