Eastern Steel Sdn Bhd has introduced Malaysia’s first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for crude steel, representing a significant advancement in industrial responsibility.

The groundbreaking initiative was facilitated by E-C Digital, a carbon measurement technology company that has recently established a branch in Malaysia to promote regional sustainability objectives.

Initiated at the “Malaysian Industrial Manufacturing Transformation” event hosted by the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturing (FMM), this initiative represents a transition to transparent, data-based environmental reporting, assisting Malaysian manufacturers in achieving global benchmarks such as the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and increasing supply chain requirements for validated carbon data.

In a statement, Eastern Steel described an EPD as an "environmental nutrition label," displaying intricate life cycle assessment (LCA) outcomes in a standardized format.

It stated that self-declarations are inadequate, and this EPD, established on a basis of scientific LCA and a rigorous MRV (measurement, reporting, and verification) process, showcases the strength of verifiable data.

Eastern Steel stated that by embracing global best practices in LCA and third-party verification, it is conforming to national climate objectives while establishing a clear governance framework for others to follow.

Eastern Steel's executive director Datuk Tee Choon Hock stated that the firm’s dedication to the thorough EPD process demonstrates its commitment to the utmost level of transparency.

“The company believes its customers deserve to know the verified environmental footprint of their products. This entire process, from the detailed LCA to the final third-party verification, strengthens internal governance and gives partners unwavering confidence in their commitment to sustainable manufacturing,” he said.

E-C Digital’s growth into Malaysia and the wider Asean region delivers carbon management tools and knowledge straight to local producers. Abbreviated as "Easy Carbon Digital," the company seeks to streamline the complexities of carbon management using its sophisticated SaaS platform.

E-C Digital is dedicated to assisting Malaysia's long-term sustainability objectives by utilizing its extensive expertise in measuring industrial carbon emissions as its presence in the region expands.

The event also emphasized the increasing importance of green product certifications in Malaysia’s sustainability initiatives. The SustainBuild Mark (SB Mark), presented by the Construction Research Institute of Malaysia (CREAM) through the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), offers Malaysian producers an important opportunity to demonstrate their environmental qualifications and comply with green building standards.

The SB Mark, anticipated to debut in August 2025, will act as a framework directing the construction sector’s shift towards a more sustainable and accountable future.

The certification focuses on a self-reported method for environmental product declarations in line with ISO 14021 principles, allowing importers and manufacturers to showcase their products' environmental performance via transparent, evidence-supported assertions.
