China and Botswana have elevated their bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, marking a new phase in diplomatic and economic engagement between the two countries. The announcement was made during talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Botswana President Duma Gideon Boko in Beijing.

Xi highlighted the importance of strengthening exchanges between the ruling parties and sharing governance experience to support the countries’ long-term development objectives.

Economic and trade cooperation featured prominently in the discussions. China expressed its willingness to improve the framework for bilateral trade and investment, while highlighting opportunities arising from its zero-tariff policy for African countries with diplomatic relations with Beijing. Botswana welcomed greater Chinese investment and expressed interest in strengthening cooperation across industrial and economic sectors.

Mining emerged as another important area of collaboration, given its significance to Botswana’s economy and China’s industrial supply chains. Xi proposed greater cooperation in mineral development, including helping African countries develop mining plans suited to their national priorities, promoting green technologies and encouraging local value addition. The two sides also discussed sustainable financing models and creating a favourable environment for investment in the mining sector.

Beyond mining, China and Botswana plan to expand collaboration in the digital economy, agriculture, livestock and smart education initiatives. Cooperation documents signed during the visit also covered healthcare, human resources, green minerals, the Belt and Road Initiative and implementation of the Global Security Initiative.

Botswana President Boko reaffirmed his country’s commitment to strengthening ties with China and maintaining coordination on international issues. He also emphasised cooperation among developing countries and support for multilateralism and a more inclusive global governance system.
