Bangladesh and Switzerland are seeking to strengthen economic ties through greater trade, investment and private-sector cooperation. Both sides are also exploring opportunities in technology, healthcare, skills development and other emerging sectors.

Bangladesh and Switzerland are seeking to deepen bilateral economic cooperation, with both countries identifying trade and investment as a key pillar of their relationship. Discussions held in Dhaka on September 7 focused on expanding bilateral commerce and encouraging greater Swiss investment in promising sectors of Bangladesh’s economy.

The latest engagement comes amid efforts by the two countries to create a more enabling environment for businesses and strengthen private-sector links. Bangladesh is seeking increased Swiss investment in sectors with potential for long-term economic growth, while both sides are exploring opportunities to broaden commercial engagement.

Economic partnership has emerged as an important component of Bangladesh-Switzerland relations, supported by growing bilateral trade and the presence of Swiss investors in Bangladesh. During the sixth round of bilateral political consultations held in Dhaka in June, both governments recognised economic cooperation as a key pillar and discussed measures to strengthen trade, investment and private-sector collaboration.

Bangladesh has also emphasised the importance of maintaining preferential market access and attracting greater Swiss capital. The two sides have expressed a shared interest in developing conditions that can support businesses from both countries and facilitate new investment opportunities.

The partnership extends beyond conventional trade. During the June consultations, Bangladesh and Switzerland discussed cooperation in skills development, climate change, healthcare, technology and information and communication technology. These areas provide opportunities for Swiss expertise and investment to contribute to Bangladesh’s efforts to develop higher-value economic activities.

Skills development is another emerging area of cooperation. Switzerland has indicated its willingness to strengthen support for technical education and vocational training in Bangladesh, with the objective of helping develop an internationally competitive workforce. Cooperation has also been discussed for the rehabilitation and skills development of returning migrant workers.

For Switzerland, Bangladesh represents a growing South Asian market with opportunities across manufacturing, services, technology and other emerging sectors. For Bangladesh, stronger Swiss investment could provide access to capital, technology, expertise and international business networks.

The latest discussions therefore reflect an effort to move bilateral relations towards a broader economic partnership, combining trade and investment with skills, technology and private sector cooperation. As Bangladesh seeks to expand its industrial and economic base, deeper engagement with Swiss companies could support diversification and higher-value investment.
