A*Star, Siemens Sign MoU to Drive Smart, Green Manufacturing
  • A*Star and Siemens signed a MoU to develop smart, sustainable manufacturing solutions.
  • The SSAM Catalyst at ARTC will enable AI-driven innovations across industries.
  • Collaboration includes research on decarbonisation and Digital Twin tech for chemicals and energy sectors.

The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star) and German industrial company Siemens entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaboratively create smart and sustainable manufacturing solutions for businesses in Singapore and the wider ASEAN region.

The partnership aims to tackle significant industrial issues by facilitating quicker access to cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) and automation knowledge, while advocating for manufacturing methods that comply with global sustainability benchmarks.

A crucial element of the collaboration is the Smart and Sustainable Advanced Manufacturing (SSAM) Catalyst, an innovation platform located at A*Star’s Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre (ARTC).

Siemens is the first technology partner to join the SSAM Catalyst, offering a range of automation, electrification, industrial software, and AI solutions.

These abilities cover the complete product lifecycle – from design and engineering to production and operations – providing manufacturers a platform to evaluate and improve technologies in industries like aerospace, fast-moving consumer goods, biomedical, and semiconductor equipment production.

The ARTC aims to create an innovation ecosystem that includes technology providers, solution integrators, and end-users to collaboratively create solutions for real-world use. Utilizing its expertise in manufacturing processes, intelligent manufacturing, sustainability analysis, accurate imaging, and autonomous technologies, it assists businesses aiming to adjust their operations in response to evolving industry circumstances.

In addition to the SSAM Catalyst, A*Star's Institute of Sustainability for Chemicals, Energy and Environment is partnering with Siemens on research initiatives focused on decarbonisation in the chemicals and energy industries.

The partnership additionally includes investigating the application of Siemens' Digital Twin technology, enabling chemical engineers to model and enhance chemical processes and develop production plants.

This technology seeks to enhance the integration of engineering and operations in manufacturing facilities, potentially assisting companies in handling design complexity and reducing construction timelines.

Professor Lim Keng Hui, Assistant Chief Executive of A*Star’s science and engineering research council, said, “Together with Siemens, we are developing solutions that will accelerate digital transformation and support decarbonisation efforts across the region. This multi-faceted collaboration looks to strengthen Singapore’s position as a regional hub for smart and sustainable manufacturing in Asean.”
