The American e-commerce giant Amazon announced on Friday that it has expanded the "Regions" coverage of its Amazon Web Services (AWS) to Taiwan, extending the services' operations in the Asia-Pacific region.

According to the firm, Amazon may spend US$5 billion in Taiwan as part of that promise to help with the building, connecting, running, and maintaining of data centers in the country.

The Regions extension to Taiwan would let developers, startups, and nongovernmental organizations to use AWS' on-demand IT web services, according to a statement from Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president of AWS Infrastructure Services.

These services include artificial intelligence (AI), databases, cloud computing storage, and even more sophisticated analytical tools.

Kalyanaraman says that businesses in Taiwan and other Asia-Pacific regions might join millions of customers in taking advantage of the speed of services, which is essential to accelerating innovation, improving operational quality, and boosting end-user sales.

There are 117 availability zones spread over 37 different locations in the global network of AWS Regions. In 2025, Taiwan and Thailand joined the ranks of Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Malaysia, Singapore, Jakarta, Hong Kong, and Beijing as the newest regions to join AWS services in the Asia-Pacific area.

AWS Regions are composed of different availability zones, which are separate infrastructures with their own power, cooling, and security systems. For instance, Taiwan has three availability zones that are both close enough to function together with little latency and far enough apart to offer a network to many clients.

Premier Cho Jung-tai praised Amazon in a statement over the opening of Regions available in Taiwan, stating that the extension of services to Taiwan demonstrates the island's significance as a vital link in the global supply chain.

In order to enhance the global digital ecosystem and further technical advancement on a global basis, he expressed his excitement about Taiwan's IT skills integrating with AWS.
