  • Sona Comstar and Jinnaite Machinery form a joint venture to produce driveline systems in China.
  • Sona Comstar invests $12 million, JNT contributes $8 million; operations start in H2 FY26.
  • The venture targets China’s EV market, leveraging JNT’s patents and Sona Comstar’s expertise.

Sona BLW Precision Forgings (Sona Comstar) has entered into a binding agreement with Jinnaite Machinery Co. (JNT) to establish a joint venture in China, focusing on producing driveline systems for automotive manufacturers worldwide.

This partnership was announced through a stock exchange filing, where Sona Comstar will invest $12 million, and JNT will put down an $8 million asset and business. It will start operation during the second half of the ongoing financial year and is a major step in taking Sona Comstar into the Chinese EV market.

The joint venture aligns with Sona Comstar’s strategy to strengthen its presence in Asia, particularly in India, China, Japan, and South Korea, while also targeting growth in North America and Europe. "Sona Comstar, a leading global supplier of driveline solutions for various automotive segments, is strategically expanding its presence in the faster-growing Asian markets," the filing stated. China, the world’s largest EV market with 11 million vehicles sold in 2024, is a critical region for any global EV supplier, the company noted.

Jinnaite Machinery brings significant expertise, holding 63 patents and contributing to five Chinese national standards. Its established customer base spans automotive, off-highway, and railway sectors, including major OEMs in China, North America, Europe, and Japan. The venture will cater to both EV and non-EV customers, leveraging Sona Comstar’s precision forging and JNT’s casting capabilities.

"As the largest electric vehicle market in the world and a leader in EV technologies, China offers tremendous opportunities for innovation and growth. By leveraging the strengths of both partners, this venture is well-positioned for strong growth, and it has the potential to become a key supplier of driveline solutions for electric vehicles in the region.

With a robust order book already in place, we expect operations to commence later this year," said Vivek Vikram Singh, MD and Group CEO of Sona Comstar.
