- Uzbekistan and China’s Sinohydro signed agreements to expand hydropower cooperation and infrastructure modernization projects nationwide.
- Projects include upgrading Shakhrikhan hydropower plants increasing capacity efficiency and renewable electricity generation across regions.
- Partnership supports clean energy goals boosting power supply reducing fossil fuel dependence and emissions nationally.
Uzbekistan and China have taken a significant step toward deepening their cooperation in the hydropower sector, as state-owned Uzbek Company Uzbekhydroenergo and China’s engineering giant Sinohydro Co., Ltd. signed a series of strategic agreements which will modernize and expand the country’s hydroelectric infrastructure.
The agreements establish a new stage for intergovernmental energy partnerships which match Tashkent's environmental objectives for renewable energy development and sustainable practices.
The newly signed agreement designates Sinohydro as the contractor for Shakhrikhan hydropower cascade modernization work because the company won a competitive tender which proved its ability to meet all technical and quality standards.
The project will be executed on a turnkey Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) basis which includes all design work and construction activities and supply of technological equipment and commissioning of the upgraded plants.

The upgrades will increase the total power capacity from 7.6 MW to 16.4 MW which enables 7.8 MW of additional clean power generation capacity. The increased capacity will deliver 33 million kilowatt-hours of extra electricity which can supply power to more than 13000 homes.
The modernization project will boost operational efficiency while establishing better technological systems and making energy systems more resilient and decreasing dependencies on fossil fuels including natural gas and coal which will result in annual savings of 11 million cubic meters of natural gas and 27500 tons of coal.
The officials declared that their extended partnership with China on energy will create deeper ties between their two countries.
The partnership demonstrates both nations' dedication to implementing modern technologies and global standards for their renewable energy initiatives, which will establish a foundation for upcoming major investment projects that will enhance Uzbekistan's energy security and sustainable growth and future development.
