  • Uzbekistan signs $225 million solar and storage deal with Masdar to expand renewable energy capacity.
  • Project includes 300MW solar plant, 75MWh battery, cutting emissions and powering 60,000 homes annually nationwide.
  • EBRD and Asian Development Bank finance project, strengthening Uzbekistan’s clean energy goals for 2030 target.

A huge solar and energy storage project worth $225 million has been signed by Uzbekistan with Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s top renewable energy firm.

The contract is a huge addition to clean energy partnerships for the country and will enable it to achieve its target of producing renewable power. The package was signed on January 15, 2026, at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week

As per the agreement, Masdar will invest in the development of a 300-megawatt solar energy plant and a 75-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system in the Kashkadarya Region of Uzbekistan. The implementation of the project will occur on a public-private partnership basis with Uzbekistan’s national grid operator.

The new energy facility will help Uzbekistan meet its goal of generating 54 percent of electricity from renewable energy by the year 2030 by accounting for the avoidance of over 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year. The new energy project will have the capability of supplying electricity to 60,000 houses.

A majority of this, to the extent of $195.5 million, has been arranged by EBRD, which includes contributions to certain climate funds, including one for Canada, another for Finland, with an additional contribution of $30 million by Asian Development Bank. Hedging facilities in this transaction have been arranged by Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank.

The CEO of Masdar said that this project is yet another instance of their growing cooperation with Uzbekistan. The UAE’s energy company Masdar has been at work in Uzbekistan since 2021 and so far has managed to contribute to the development of over 2 gigawatts of renewable energy there.

Plans are already under way at Masdar for further development of its presence in Central Asia, with further wind and solar energy schemes being developed. Ultimately, Masdar’s corporate plan is for 100 GW of clean energy worldwide by 2030.

This agreement reinforces Uzbekistan’s role as a growing hub for renewable energy investment and highlights international collaboration in tackling climate change while enhancing energy security.
