The UAE and Germany are strengthening their strategic partnership through expanded cooperation in investment, energy, AI, technology and innovation. President Sheikh Mohamed’s state visit to Berlin aims to advance bilateral ties and address shared regional priorities.

The United Arab Emirates and Germany are seeking to deepen their longstanding strategic partnership as UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan began a state visit to Berlin. The visit brings together the UAE President, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Friedrich Merz to discuss bilateral relations, economic cooperation and shared regional and international priorities.

The talks are focused on expanding cooperation across economic and development sectors, with both countries looking to build on their strategic partnership established in 2004. Areas of growing cooperation include investment, technology, energy, innovation and research. UAE officials have described the visit as an opportunity to open new avenues for collaboration and strengthen institutional ties between the two countries.

Economic relations form a major component of the partnership. Bilateral trade between the UAE and Germany exceeded $15.5 billion in 2025, while around 2,000 German companies operate in the UAE. The two countries have also developed significant energy cooperation, including partnerships involving liquefied natural gas, renewable energy, hydrogen and decarbonisation.

The energy relationship has expanded beyond traditional oil and gas cooperation. The UAE and Germany have worked on renewable energy and climate initiatives, while UAE-based Masdar holds a 49% stake in Germany’s 476-megawatt Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm. Recent discussions have also included opportunities for ADNOC and German energy companies to expand LNG supply cooperation for Germany and European markets.

Technology and artificial intelligence are emerging as another important area of bilateral engagement. Germany and the UAE are expected to advance cooperation involving AI, research and investment, linking German industrial and technological capabilities with UAE capital, infrastructure and regional market access. The broader technology agenda reflects both countries’ efforts to strengthen their positions in advanced industries and digital transformation.

The state visit also comes amid heightened geopolitical uncertainty, with the two governments expected to exchange views on regional and international developments. Defence, energy security and economic resilience have gained greater importance as countries reassess strategic dependencies and supply chains.

The visit underscores the UAE and Germany’s efforts to build a broader, forward-looking partnership extending beyond trade into technology, energy, investment, education and innovation. Both sides are seeking to use established political ties and expanding commercial links to support long-term economic growth and cooperation.
