Turkmenistan, Indonesia Back Central Asia-ASEAN Talks

Synopsis: Turkmenistan and Indonesia advance cooperation by discussing the new Central Asia–ASEAN dialogue framework, aiming to strengthen regional connectivity, trade, investment, and diplomatic engagement.

Turkmenistan and Indonesia have reinforced their diplomatic engagement via high level talks in Jakarta, focusing on the implementation of the proposed Central Asia + ASEAN regional dialogue framework. This idea is expected to bolster political conversation, bring up wider economic cooperation, and generally improve connectivity between Central Asia and Southeast Asia, while at the same time carving out new opportunities for partnership between the two regions.

The talks happened in the course of an official working trip by Turkmen Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmet Gurbanov, who met with the Indonesian counterpart in order to look over bilateral relations and see possible ways of enlarging regional cooperation a bit more. In general both sides showed clear backing for setting up the new interregional platform, and they described it as a fairly significant mechanism for strengthening nearer political, economic, and institutional connections between the Central Asian countries and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

During the meeting officials highlighted the possible of the proposed dialogue framework, to push trade and investment and then sort of widen economic integration. They said that tighter engagement between Central Asia and ASEAN could help regional connectivity, make business partnerships easier, and also invite more cooperation in fields like transport, logistics, energy, and sustainable development. Both sides also reaffirmed their dedication to keeping regular consultations between their foreign ministries in order to move forward bilateral matters, and multilateral initiatives too.

As part of his visit, Gurbanov also met with the ASEAN Secretary-General, Kao Kim Hourn, at the organisation’s headquarters in Jakarta, and you know how those meetings go. The meetings also highlighted, in a way, the importance of tighter diplomatic coordination between Turkmenistan and Indonesia. Officials seemed to agree that a regular back-and-forth between their foreign ministries would play a key role in supporting the rollout of joint plans and, in the same time, reinforcing long-standing bilateral ties.

The latest talk’s build on that growing momentum in the ties between the two countries, you know. In November 2025, Turkmenistan’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Muhammetnyyaz Mashalov, presented his credentials to Indonesian authorities, with both sides in effect reaffirming their dedication to broadening diplomatic engagement and keeping regular high level communication going.

By pushing the Central Asia and ASEAN dialogue framework along with strengthening their two-sided cooperation, Turkmenistan and Indonesia are trying to make regional connections thicker, boost economic linkages, and open fresh avenues for trade, investment, and cultural swapping. This effort mirrors the same resolve of both states to encourage more collaboration between Central Asia and Southeast Asia, and to back longer term regional stability, as well as sustainable progress.
