Sunrev Solar Begins $200M Solar Manufacturing Project in Egypt
  • Sunrev Solar starts building a $200M solar manufacturing plant in Ain Sokhna Industrial Zone, Egypt.
  • Project to be completed in two phases, aiming for 4 GW annual capacity and local production of raw materials.
  • The facility is expected to generate $300M annually through exports and strengthen Egypt’s green industry base.

China's Sunrev Solar has begun building a USD 200-million solar manufacturing facility in Egypt's Ain Sokhna Industrial Zone, representing a significant advancement in the nation’s clean energy goals.

The General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) announced that the project will be implemented in two phases on a 200,000-square-metre area.

In the initial phase, Sunrev Solar plans to allocate USD 90 million to set up two fully integrated facilities, each capable of producing 2 GW annually, with one focusing on solar cells and the other on solar modules. The facilities are anticipated to be operational by the first half of 2026, aiding Egypt’s objective of enhancing local photovoltaic (PV) technology manufacturing.

In the second phase, an additional USD 110 million will be allocated to localise the production of vital raw materials, such as silicon ingots and wafers. This stage will also increase the production of solar cells and modules, boosting Egypt's competitiveness in international PV markets.

The finished complex is expected to produce approximately USD 300 million in yearly revenue, mainly fueled by exports to both regional and international markets. Authorities state that the initiative will greatly improve the nation's green industrial foundation and establish it as a solar manufacturing center in the MENA area.

The launch of construction comes after a formal contract signing attended by Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, emphasizing top-level backing for Egypt’s renewable energy industrialization goals.

SCZONE also hosts another major solar initiative supported by Chinese funding. Toward the end of 2024, Elite Solar initiated the building of a gigawatt-scale plant to manufacture N-type solar cells and integrated module-cell-wafer systems with a yearly capacity of 2 GW, reinforcing the area’s standing as a hub for green technology.
