South Korea Launches 500 AI Projects to Transform Manufacturing

The government of South Korea announced plans to implement over 500 initiatives in the coming five years to integrate artificial intelligence into the country’s industrial framework, as part of President Lee Jae-myung’s effort to create a “super-innovation economy.”

Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan presented the strategy during a meeting with leaders from Samsung Electronics, LG Energy Solution, and Nongshim, highlighting the magnitude and scope of the initiative. The program aims to enhance manufacturing efficiency, lower expenses, and decrease carbon emissions by integrating AI into production.

The initiative expands on 102 ongoing projects, with the government aiming for over 500 by 2030, according to the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

Samsung plans to utilize AI to enhance quality and inspection benchmarks for high-bandwidth memory chips, aiming for accuracy rates exceeding 99%, as stated by officials. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is creating AI-driven robots for the upkeep of naval vessels, while Hyundai Motor Group is designing an AI-based robotic arm that can manage various product lines.

The initiative for AI integration stands as one of the administration's premier economic strategies, paired with substantial public investment in semiconductors, batteries, and defense exports. Authorities indicate that the strategy aims to both update conventional manufacturing and establish South Korea as a worldwide frontrunner in industrial AI implementations.
