Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong traveled to Japan to conduct a diplomatic mission which aimed to enhance fuel supply security and develop energy partnerships between countries. The visit occurs during a period when Middle Eastern conflicts and maritime restrictions have created major disruptions to global oil markets which have raised fuel supply concerns throughout Asia Pacific.

Wong conducted discussions with senior Japanese officials during her Tokyo meetings which included her counterpart and ministers who oversaw trade and economic matters and economic security. The talks aimed to establish dependable fuel supplies for Australia which relies on Asian imports to support its domestic economy and maintain its status as a leading energy and food exporter.

Wong stated that Australia's ongoing natural gas and coal and agricultural product exports to regional partners depend on the uninterrupted supply of critical materials which include diesel and jet fuel and petrol and fertilisers.
