Michigan Gov Whitmer Meets PM Wong During Singapore Visit

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer met with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and discussed prospects in technology and advanced manufacturing during her four-day trip to Singapore.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) noted that during the meeting with the US governor, PM Wong highlighted the enduring and advantageous partnership between Singapore and the US at federal and state levels.

He also appreciated Michigan’s eagerness to enhance economic collaboration with Singapore, it noted. PM Wong and the governor also talked about US trade policies, relationships between people, and how Singapore and Michigan can enhance collaboration in shared areas of interest, MFA noted.

Governor Wong was warmly welcomed to Singapore by the PM. He said, “As a proud University of Michigan alumnus, I’m especially happy that Governor Whitmer and her team are here to explore opportunities in technology, advanced manufacturing, and supply chain resilience.”

PM Wong expressed hope for a successful visit for Governor Whitmer and noted that he anticipated results that would be advantageous for the citizens of both nations. The governor met with Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan on that same day.

Dr. Balakrishnan and the governor emphasized that collaboration between Singapore and Michigan could strengthen the overall relationship between Singapore and the United States, according to the MFA.

Democratic Governor Whitmer also engaged with representatives from the Economic Development Board and participated in a roundtable discussion with Enterprise Singapore and Singaporean firms operating in Michigan.

She also participated in a gathering for University of Michigan graduates in Singapore. The governor's visit, scheduled from Aug 30 to Sept 2, includes representatives from the Michigan state government along with those from economic development, entrepreneurship, and innovation sectors.
