Meralco, Vietnam Firms Join Forces to Accelerate EV Adoption
  • Meralco signs MoU with V-Green and Green GSM to expand EV adoption.
  • Collaboration focuses on EV charging stations and e-taxi bases.
  • Aims to build a nationwide clean mobility ecosystem in the Philippines.

Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), under Pangilinan's leadership, has partnered with two key Vietnamese green mobility companies to promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the Philippines.

Meralco has entered into a memorandum of understanding with V-Green Global Charging Station Development Corp. and Green and Smart Mobility Joint Stock Co. (Green GSM) to develop EV infrastructure in Metro Manila and other main cities.

V-Green creates networks for EV charging, whereas Green GSM is Vietnam's pioneering all-electric ride-hailing service. Through the collaboration, the involved parties will evaluate locations for electric vehicle charging stations and electric taxi bases while seeking possibilities to enhance the nation’s green mobility initiative.

The collaboration also promotes technical collaboration and sharing of knowledge on electric vehicle technologies and system design.

Meralco chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan mentioned that the parties would utilize their joint knowledge in infrastructure and technology to transform energy, transportation, and sustainability.

“We are committed to helping build this ecosystem – one that is future-ready, inclusive and grounded in service. We want Filipinos to experience the future of transport, not just in Metro Manila but across the archipelago,” Pangilinan said.

Being the largest power utility in the country, Meralco is dedicated to implementing comprehensive electric vehicle and charging systems for enterprises and the general public to support the objectives of the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act.

“Together with VinFast and Green GSM, we are proud to contribute to a comprehensive EV ecosystem that supports the country’s journey towards a cleaner and more sustainable future,” V-Green CEO Nguyen Thanh Duong said.

Vinfast, a different Vietnamese automotive firm, V-Green, and Green GSM have since grown in the Philippines to offer eco-friendly mobility solutions. These solutions encompass the distribution of EVs, the establishment of charging infrastructure, and the operation of electric taxis.

“The Philippines is a vibrant and fast-growing market where we see strong momentum for clean mobility solutions,” Green GSM Philippines CEO Dao Quy Phi said, citing plans to expand the firm’s services to more cities nationwide.
