  • Talks planned with Chinese and Japanese firms for new partnerships.
  • Focus includes AI-driven innovation and talent development in the sector.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that Malaysia is seeking new markets for its semiconductor sector as part of its efforts to diversify into new and unconventional markets.

In this regard, the Prime Minister noted that China has made remarkable progress in this area, and Malaysia is keen to learn and investigate potential partnerships with its Chinese counterparts.

“Malaysia is fortunate to become the hub of semiconductors in South-east Asia...with more than 60 per cent of our electrical and electronic (E&E) and semiconductor products exported to the United States.

“So the decision is to continue with that, but at the same time to open up new markets, and we are working with Chinese and Japanese companies,” he stated during the Q&A session at his public lecture conducted at Tianjin University here today.

Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, highlighted the importance of developing new talents in the industry, such as innovative technology that employs artificial intelligence (AI).

He mentioned that a significant opportunity exists since China has opened up, but in addition to partnerships, developing a training element is crucial.

“In fact, tomorrow I will meet with all the China-based semiconductor players to discuss and work on the formula. We have to explore this and work together,” he said.

The Prime Minister is on a four-day official visit to China, marking his fourth trip to the nation since taking office in November 2022. — Bernama
