Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, stated that there is an opportunity for Malaysia and the wider Asia-Pacific region to be global leaders in the clean energy revolution. He stated, they could build more renewable energy capacity, adding that Malaysia is in a good position to become a solar powerhouse due to its geographical location, plenty of sunshine and strong political will.
Fadillah underscored the significance of the Asia-Pacific Green Deal, a major initiative that aims to bend the course of the Asia-Pacific toward a sustainable and low-carbon pathway. The Asia-Pacific Green Deal is a framework to facilitate cross-border collaboration, optimise renewable energy resources, and position Asean as a competitive leader in sustainability, visible on the global stage. The green deal gives nations a shared vision to integrate energy policies with commitments to global climate change by using a whole-of-economy approach that balances environmental responsibilities and economic development.
“Furthermore, the country has significant potential for biomass energy, and hydropower development.
“The successful implementation of floating solar farms and large-scale solar projects across the country demonstrates our capabilities in harnessing clean energy resources,” he said during his keynote address at the United Nation (UN) Asia-Pacific Business Forum 2025 on Thursday.
For the green deal to become a reality, nations in the Asia Pacific must work collectively by sharing best practices, investing in clean technologies, and developing regional carbon markets,” he said.
Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam can harness their renewable energy potential and implement cross-border energy trading schemes, and countries like Japan and Australia can support in capacity building and technological development. Therefore, he stated that improved public-private partnerships and international collaboration will be crucial to unlocking the funding and expertise needed to accelerate this transition.
As Asean chair, it is Malaysia's goals to enhance Asean's role in the global energy transition through enhancing regional integration, innovations and investments in renewable energy, he continued.
