LR, HD Hyundai MIPO Partner to Boost Digital Type C Tank Production
  • Lloyd’s Register and HD Hyundai MIPO Dockyard sign MoU to develop digital manufacturing for Type C tanks storing LNG and LCO2.
  • The partnership aims to enhance quality assurance using digital twins and intelligent monitoring to boost efficiency and traceability.
  • The initiative runs from May 2025 to July 2026, targeting faster production with reliable, transparent quality certification in shipbuilding.

Lloyd’s Register (LR) and HD Hyundai MIPO Dockyard (HMD) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together on enhancing digital manufacturing for Type C tanks.

The MoU outlines a shared dedication to create and validate an efficient, digitally facilitated production method for Type C tanks, anticipated to experience greater demand because of their capacity to hold pressurized and cryogenic cargo/fuel of LNG or liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2).

Sung-Gu Park, President – North East Asia, Lloyd’s Register, said, “This initiative is poised to deliver a smart, transparent quality assurance framework for HMD’s future smart factory. By embedding digital tools into the heart of the production of Type C tanks, it will enhance efficiency, reduce variability, and increase traceability in the production of these critical components.”

Its goal is to create a transparent quality assurance system by producing Type C tanks for the storage of LNG or LCO2. HMD plans to incorporate monitoring and digital manufacturing technologies, such as digital twin technology and intelligent quality assurance systems, into its manufacturing processes. LR will offer technical assistance and independently confirm the adoption and use of these technologies.

Hyung Kwan Kim, CEO of HD Hyundai Mipo, said, “With the advancement of digital manufacturing and automation technologies with monitoring system, consistent quality assurance and verifiable data-based quality certification has become possible. This aims to enhance the transparency of quality and establish a shipbuilding production system that ship owners can trust.”

The initiative is set to take place from May 2025 to July 2026, with LR collaborating with HMD’s engineering and production teams to confirm the implementation of innovative digital workflows in a smart factory setting designed for the future. The objective is to decrease production duration and variability, while enhancing trust in the reliability and safety of tank construction.
