Kazakhstan completes its first passenger flight using an unmanned air taxi, marking a milestone in urban air mobility and advancing plans to integrate autonomous aircraft into future transport networks.

In this regard, Kazakhstan has made a very important step forward in developing the Urban Air Mobility because it has conducted its first successful test flight of an unmanned air taxi carrying passengers. This is a clear indication that the nation has entered the era of next-generation autonomous aviation.

The demo flight occurred in Astana, where the EH216-S eVTOL electric aircraft performed a passenger flight within a designated area as part of the Games of the Future 2026 international competition. During this flight, the aircraft flew without a pilot while having a passenger onboard, thus becoming the first time such a flight was performed in Kazakhstan.

Built with autonomous functionality in mind, the EH216-S is built to accommodate two passengers, attain a top speed of 130 km/h, and cover a maximum distance of 35 kilometers in one flight. The successful demonstration served to illustrate the capabilities of the aircraft in actual flying conditions and demonstrate the expanding possibilities of autonomous passenger flying.

As mentioned by the Ministry of Transport in Kazakhstan, the first phase of implementation will be oriented toward demo and tourist flights ranging from five to thirty minutes in duration. These flights will take place over sites in Kazakhstan that include its natural, cultural, and historical landmarks as a means for people to discover Kazakhstan from a different perspective.

Over time, the government intends to integrate unmanned passenger drones into the wider transport system of Kazakhstan. The unmanned air taxis are supposed to supplement the current modes of transport by ensuring efficiency through faster transport systems.

This particular trial fits into the overall plans of Kazakhstan in establishing a state-of-the-art urban air mobility system. This year alone, the country has passed laws which recognise electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles, vertiports and unmanned traffic management systems, providing the required regulations for potential future commercial operations.

Also, Kazakhstan is making an effort to localize the production of unmanned aerial systems through partnerships with other nations, promoting advanced manufacturing and creating employment opportunities. This project is expected to boost the country’s innovation network while also boosting investments in the latest aviation technologies.

This successful flight is an indication that Kazakhstan is fully ready to embrace the new generation of mobility technology. Through the development of autonomy in the aviation industry, establishment of laws and building of modern infrastructure, Kazakhstan has a vision to become a leader in urban air mobility in Central Asia.
