Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is set to attend the groundbreaking of an integrated electric vehicle (EV) battery project in East Halmahera, North Maluku, on 29 June.
President Prabowo Subianto is expected to visit Halmahera this week to inaugurate the specifications of the planned integrated EV battery factory. The government has nicknamed the planned facility, “the world’s first upstream-downstream car battery ecosystem,” — means that the complete process from nickel mining and refining to battery manufacturing will take place on Halmahera.
On Tuesday, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia announced that the project receives investment support from China's Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL).
The facility will combine various elements, such as mining activities, a smelter, high-pressure acid leach (HPAL) processing, and the production of precursors and cathodes.

“This will be the first project of its kind and scale in the world,” Lahadalia claimed, adding that the total investment is estimated at around US$6 billion.
He expressed assurance that the costs of producing EV batteries in Indonesia will be greatly lowered with this completely integrated system.
The project is among 18 downstream industrial ventures — estimated to cost nearly US$45 billion — that are planned for development in Indonesia. Additional initiatives encompass areas such as nickel, bauxite, oil refining, energy storage, coal gasification (DME), along with fisheries, agriculture, and forestry industries.
