Indonesia and the Philippines created a historic partnership through their Nickel Corridor agreement which will improve worldwide electric vehicle battery and stainless steel production networks. The two countries joined together their extensive nickel reserves which produced almost 74 percent of the world's nickel supply during 2025.
Indonesia and the Philippines have launched a major strategic initiative known as the Nickel Corridor which aims to enhance electric vehicle battery production and stainless steel manufacturing through improved global supply chain processes. The agreement was formalised through a memorandum of understanding which the Indonesian Nickel Miners Association and Philippine Nickel Industry Association signed in Cebu during the 48th ASEAN Summit. The officials labeled the partnership as a groundbreaking development that would change the global nickel market while strengthening Southeast Asia's position in the shift to clean energy.
The partnership brings together the vast nickel resources of both nations because their combined resources produced approximately 73.6 percent of the world's nickel output in 2025 according to USGS data. Indonesia maintains its position as the top nickel producer globally because it controls approximately 44.5 percent of the world's nickel reserves while the Philippines exists as one of the main sources of nickel ore. The two nations plan to establish a dependable supply chain for essential minerals through their combined strengths.
Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto explained that Nickel Corridor functions as an industrial platform which connects Indonesia's downstream smelting and processing operations to Philippine ore supply networks. Philippine nickel ore serves as a necessary resource because Indonesian smelters need specific ore blends that match particular silicon-to-magnesium ratios to produce battery-grade materials.

The program intends to enhance manufacturing capabilities throughout the region while it speeds up funding for electric vehicle battery production facilities. The agreement requires a minimum monthly nickel supply of 200000 metric tonnes which will start in June 2026 to meet industrial requirements. Indonesia plans to attract USD 47.36 billion in downstream investments while creating 180000 jobs through developments in its battery and critical mineral sectors by 2030.
The partnership provides industrial advantages which also serve as a foundation for ASEAN energy security and economic integration initiatives. Nickel has become a strategic commodity because it serves essential functions in electric vehicle production and renewable energy storage systems and advanced manufacturing processes. The new corridor will help Southeast Asia to strengthen its position in the global battery market while reducing supply chain risk according to analysts.
The agreement establishes a new direction which requires countries to develop processing industries that generate more valuable products than their current raw material export operations. The Philippines aims to increase its participation in advanced industrial value chains while Indonesia requires better security of feedstock materials to support its growing smelting industry. The experts observed that the collaboration will have a major impact on global nickel prices and the stability of supply as well as the development of essential mineral resources.
