Indonesia launches a 100 GW solar power programme targeted for completion within three years. The initiative begins with 14 projects totaling 5.3 GWp and aims to attract $73 billion, create jobs and reduce fossil-fuel dependence.
Indonesia has launched an ambitious programme to develop 100 GW of solar power capacity within three years, as President Prabowo Subianto seeks to strengthen national energy security and reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels. The programme is inaugurated on August 25 in Jembrana, Bali, marking a major expansion of Indonesia’s renewable-energy plans.
The initiative begins with 14 solar power projects across six provinces, with a combined capacity of around 5.3 GWp. The projects are located in West Java, Central Java, East Java, Bali, Bangka Belitung and the Riau Islands. Several projects involve floating solar installations at reservoirs, while others are being developed on land.

The first phase includes projects at Tembesi, Pulau Sembur, Pulau Rengit, Saguling, Purwakarta, Jatiluhur, Cirata, Jatigede, Gajah Mungkur, Karangkates, Madura, Pasuruan, Banyuwangi and Gilimanuk. The government expects these projects to establish the foundation for the much larger 100 GW expansion.
The programme requires an estimated $73 billion in investment, equivalent to more than ₹1.1 lakh crore. Indonesian authorities expect the development to generate around 5.52 million jobs while reducing annual electricity-related subsidies by approximately 73.9 trillion rupiah. The programme is also expected to contribute to lower carbon emissions as solar power replaces part of the country’s fossil-fuel-based generation.
One of the prominent projects is the Gilimanuk solar plant in Bali, which is planned with 198 MWp of solar capacity combined with a 666 MWh battery energy storage system. The facility is designed to replace fuel-based electricity generation and is targeted for commercial operation in 2028.
The government is also preparing additional projects for tender, including large floating solar facilities at Jatiluhur and an expansion of the Cirata floating solar plant. Six projects with a combined capacity of around 4.55 GWp are reportedly ready for tender.
President Prabowo positions the programme as a key component of Indonesia’s drive towards energy self-sufficiency. The country currently has around 1.5 GWp of installed solar capacity, despite an estimated solar potential of more than 3,000 GWp.

The solar programme is also linked to Indonesia’s broader objective of reducing energy imports. Prabowo says the country should progressively eliminate its dependence on imported oil and LPG while expanding renewable energy, geothermal resources and domestic oil and gas production.
With the 100 GW target, Indonesia is seeking to rapidly scale renewable generation, attract large-scale investment and create a stronger domestic clean energy ecosystem. The programme could significantly reshape the country’s power mix while supporting its longer-term energy independence and decarbonisation objectives.
