Indonesia Boosts Aluminum Output Capacity to 900 KTPA
  • Indonesia aims to reduce aluminum import reliance through domestic production expansion.
  • MIND ID to enhance integrated downstream aluminum industry for global competitiveness.
  • SGAR Phase II and new bauxite reservoir to support long-term supply chain sustainability.

The Indonesian Mining Industry Holding MIND ID plans to boost national aluminum production capacity to 900,000 tonnes annually by 2029, rising from the existing installed capacity of 275,000 tonnes.

MIND ID President Director Maroef Sjamsoeddin stated that this action aims to further bridge the gap between the supply and demand for national aluminum, which currently stands at 1.2 million tonnes annually.

The MIND ID Group is dedicated to advancing integrated aluminum downstream to enhance Indonesia's status as a global aluminum producer and can independently support the manufacturing sector while decreasing reliance on imports, he stated.

Maroef stated that domestic aluminum consumption is projected to rise by approximately 600% over the next three decades, particularly to support the electric vehicle (EV) and battery sectors, noting that aluminum usage in a single battery pack has reached 18%, and constructing a 1 MW PV solar unit requires around 21 tonnes of aluminum.

He mentioned that his firm is in the process of developing a new aluminum production plant project in Mempawah, aiming for a production capacity of up to 600 KTPA. When this is added to the current facility held by INALUM, MIND ID's total capacity will be approximately 900 KTPA.

Regarding the upstream sector, Maroef stated that MIND ID has commenced operations of the Smelter Grade Alumina Refinery (SGAR) Phase I, which has a capacity of 1 million tonnes of alumina annually. SGAR Phase II is currently in preparation and will enhance production capacity by 1 million tonnes annually.

He mentioned that via PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, he is also ready to enhance the bauxite ore supply by constructing a bauxite reservoir facility with a capacity of 1.47 million tonnes annually in the Mempawah operational region.

In project development, Maroef mentioned that MIND ID also focuses on integrating supporting infrastructure, such as logistics, and considers social sustainability in operational regions.
