The state's governor said Tuesday that General Motors and Samsung SDI will construct a more than $3 billion EV battery cell plant in Indiana, which will begin operations in 2026 and create 1,700 manufacturing jobs.

The businesses announced in April that they would invest more than $3 billion in a joint venture EV battery production plant in the United States, but did not specify a site.

GM announced in January that it had decided not to proceed with the construction of a fourth U.S. battery factory in Indiana with LG Energy Solution, but that it might still choose Indiana for a battery plant with another partner.

General Motors has manufacturing units in eight different nations. Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac are its four primary automotive brands. Through SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile, it also has a stake in the Chinese brands Baojun and Wuling.GM also owns the BrightDrop delivery vehicle manufacturer, a name-brand defence vehicles division that manufactures military vehicles for the United States government and military, the vehicle safety, security, and information services provider OnStar, the auto parts company ACDelco, a name-brand financial lending service, and a majority stake in the self-driving car company Cruise LLC.
