China Launches Digital IDs for EV Battery Traceability

Asia Manufacturing Review Team | Wednesday, 21 January 2026

  • China introduces digital IDs for EV batteries, improving traceability, sustainability, and lifecycle tracking for circular economy.
  • The system ensures safety, enabling authorities to verify battery recycling and ethical sourcing of materials.
  • The initiative supports China’s strategy to lead the global shift to electric vehicles and sustainable practices.

By creating an electronic identification system for EV batteries/electric vehicle batteries, China hopes to increase the ability to trace them through their life cycles.

With the increase in public awareness about the safe and eco-friendly use of those batteries, more people are concerned about how the companies that manufacture, transport, sell, and dispose of those batteries are complying with legal requirements.

An electronic identification will help to provide complete visibility into the entire battery manufacturing process from manufacturing through disposal.

Under the new system, each EV battery will be issued an individual digital code that will be recorded on a centralized database.

The code will monitor different factors like the source of the battery materials, performance characteristics, and the stage of recycling. This will ensure greater clarity within the EV market so that consumers can access information about the products easily.

Increased safety is also said to be one of the major benefits of the system, in that it will allow authorities to check that the batteries installed in EVs have worked their way through a complete lifecycle and are recycled at the end of life. Such a move would also help establish clarity over the ethical sourcing of materials such as lithium and cobalt, key components in EV batteries.

This new act is a part of China’s overall strategies to lead in the global shift to electric vehicles. The act will also work to enhance the overall growth of a strong infrastructure in the recycling of electric vehicle batteries.

The infrastructure will be a key aspect in China’s overall aim to ensure sustainability. The act will aid in making electric vehicle battery producers accountable, hence facilitating a shift to a cleaner environment in China’s overall electric vehicle industry.
