Japanese Automaker Recalls 443,800 Vehicles Over Engine Risk
  • Nissan recalls over 480,000 vehicles across the U.S. and Canada over engine failure concerns.
  • VC-Turbo engine defects in bearings may lead to progressive engine damage and failure.
  • Dealers to offer free inspections and repairs; owner notifications to begin in late August.

Nissan is recalling more than 480,000 vehicles due to potential manufacturing defects that could lead to engine failure. The recall affects specific models, including 2021–2024 Nissan Rogues, 2019–2020 Altimas, 2019–2022 Infiniti QX50s, and 2022 Infiniti QX55s, according to documents from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

These vehicles, sold under both Nissan and its luxury brand Infiniti, are being recalled due to concerns around engine durability. In total, 443,899 vehicles are affected in the U.S., while 37,837 are impacted in Canada, as confirmed by a Nissan spokesperson.

The recalled automobiles are equipped with 3-cylinder 1.5L or 4-cylinder 2.0L "VC-Turbo" engines, which the NHTSA recall report states may have knock-on effects from manufacturing defects with the bearings in the engines, potentially causing engine damage down the line.

Even though these bearing failures don't usually happen overnight, they will get worse over time, and, eventually, lead to a complete engine failure. The driver may be alerted to the problems via strange engine noises or warning indicators such as a malfunction light (MIL). The regulator warns that defect implies greater risk of a crash, especially if engine failure happens while being driven.

In solving this issue, Nissan and Infiniti dealerships will inspect the oil pans of the affected vehicles for debris or damage. If any is found, the engine will either be repaired or possibly replaced at no cost to the customer.

The repairs will depend on the engine itself and whether any internal debris is present. Nissan has stated that it is completing this recall due to its responsibility to its customers' safety, as is the case for all recalls.

Affected owners will begin to receive official notification letters starting in late August with instructions to bring their vehicle in for inspection. In the meantime, drivers can confirm whether or not their vehicle is part of the recall with resources on NHTSA's website or via Nissan recall lookup page.
